Why Do You Seek Others?

Therefore, the anger of the Lord was aroused against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, "Why have you sought the gods of the people, which could not rescue their own people from your hand?" 2 Chronicles 25:15 (NKJV)

King Amaziah of Judah was preparing to go to war with Seir, and he hired one hundred thousand soldiers from Israel to fight with him. Because Israel was not following God, the Lord sent a man of God to Amaziah, who told him not to bring Israel along because He was not with them. Amaziah obeyed and had a great victory over Seir, yet he took their gods and set them up to be his own, angering the Lord. God then sent a prophet to Amaziah, who asked why he had chosen gods of the people He beat to worship. For that Amaziah suffered great losses against Israel and his house was plundered.

The question that we need to ask ourselves is, "If God is with us, why do we seek other things to worship?" Jesus says in Matthew 6:33, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Money, property, and fame can become our gods, who we put before the one true God, and can become fleeting, leaving us with nothing but misery. God on the other hand is eternal, and He gives us the things of this world like money, property, and fame to do His greater good, but they are not to replace Him.

Chose to seek the kingdom of God first and foremost, prioritizing your relationship with Him above all else. Start each day with dedicated prayer and bible reading, thanking Him for the resources that He has given you and asking Him to use them for His greater good. Recognize that God is in control of your life, incorporating Him into your daily decisions, and choosing to follow His will. Surround yourself with other believers who can provide support and accountability as you seek to prioritize God in your life. When you seek God first, He provides you with what you need and blesses your life.
