He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 21:6 (NIV)
King Jehoram had trouble for all of his short reign because he chose not to follow God, but the evil ways of Israel. He started out his reign by killing all his brothers and forced the people of Judah to follow the ways of the pagan gods, leading them astray. Edom and Libnah revolted against him, causing internal conflict and weakened his kingdom. Elijah sent him a letter saying that because of his sin, God was going to strike his bowels with an incurable disease, and he would die from it after two years. Then the Philistines and Arabians attacked him and carried away all the possessions that was in his house. Because of his evil ways, Jehoram ruled only eight years, and after his death, there was no sorrow for him, and he was not buried in the tombs of the kings.
God gave us the free will to choose to follow the ways of the world or to follow Him. In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.” When we walk in darkness, we are blinded to consequences of our sinful acts and the destruction that they bring to our lives. But when we follow Jesus as our savior, He provides the light so that we are not only saved from our sin, but able to see the consequences and turn away from them.
