Therefore, he did evil in the sight of the Lord, like the house of Ahab; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction. 2 Chronicles 22:4 (NKJV)
After the death of his father, Jehoram, Ahaziah became king of Judah and did even more evil than his father because he surrounded himself with evil counselors. One counselor that was especially evil was his mother, Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab, and was a Baal worshipper, continuing the idolatrous practices of her mother Jezebel. Ahaziah only ruled one year, and after his death, his mother seized the throne of Judah and executed all the sons in the Davidic line. Despite her violence, God’s covenant promise to preserve David’s lineage remained intact. Jehosheba, wife of the high priest Jehoiada and Athalia's sister, hid the infant Joash (Ahaziah’s son) in the temple for six years.
Everyone has some sort of advice for us, and it's not always good. As believers, we need to discern between the good and the bad, the counsel that comes from God verses that of the world. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” As believers we are called to seek wisdom directly from God, recognizing that He is the ultimate source of guidance.
Choose to listen to godly counsel, building yourself up to discern between godly and ungodly advice. Read the bible daily and test all that is said against the scripture. Be careful of those who misquote the bible and check the scripture for yourself, reading before and after the quoted verse to see its context. Pray for discernment from the Holy Spirit and seek wise and mature counsel from your church. Ask God to purify your heart and remove pride, envy, or selfish desires that lead to unwise decisions. When you reject ungodly counsel, you align yourself with God’s truth and His will, which leads to spiritual protection, moral integrity, and long-term blessing.
