But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding. Great men are not always wise, nor do the aged always understand justice. Job 32:8-9 (NKJV)
After Job's three friends refrained from saying anymore because they saw that Job was righteous in his own mind, Elihu, who was much younger, spoke against the three men because they condemned Job even though they found no answer. Elihu refrained from speaking because the three men were much older and he assumed that with age, wisdom would come. He implied that with them, it was not so and that true understanding only comes from God and not age.
As long-time believers we may attest that we have wisdom on matters of the bible and life on earth, but don't spend time God's word. Just because we go to church twice a year, we are not experts on the heart of God. True understanding comes from God and his Word. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness." The entire Bible is inspired by God for instructing us in God’s truth, correcting wrong beliefs or behaviors, and restoring us to right ways. The bible trains us in righteousness, equipping us to live in accordance with God’s standards, fostering maturity and readiness for good works.
Choose to read your bible daily so that you can attain the understanding that comes from God. Set a time of the day when you can be by yourself to study His word and make a commitment to it. Put away your phone, turn off the tv, or any other distraction that may keep you from focusing on your studies. Pray for God to give you understanding and an open mind before you read the bible and keep a pad next to you so that you can write down verses that speak to you. Meditate on what you have read and do a detailed search on what you have written down. Have a bible concordance available, such as Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, or do an internet search on what God has showed you. When you understand that true understanding comes from God, you are able to instruct in God's truth, correct wrong beliefs, and restore to the right ways.
