They divided them impartially by casting lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar. 1 Chronicles 24:5 (NIV)
There was an iniquity between the house of Eleazer and the house of Ithamar, the sons of Aaron, so to keep the priestly duties fair, lots were cast between the twenty-four leaders. God wanted to prevent favoritism and maintain unity amongst the priests. Unlike the Israelite households where the birthright went to the oldest son, lots were cast to show that God choose the assignment, and each one was just as important to him.
Just as in the temple service, all positions served in today's church are just as important to God and He chooses or calls us to service. 1 Corinthians 12:4 says, "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them." All the positions in the church, pastor, elder, deacon, and so on, should reflect God’s will, not human bias. No matter where we serve, our gifts and duties are part of a greater purpose, which is to bring people to Christ, one person at a time.
Choose to follow your spiritual calling and serve God with honor and integrity. No matter what you do, if teaching in Sunday school, greeting people, or praying over a fellow parishioner is what God calls you to do, you are doing His work. Remember that anything that you do in service to God is counted as worthy and in the same spirit as any other position because the Holy Spirit that is in you, guides you to do the Lord's work.
