Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, from his father’s house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, gatekeepers of the tabernacle. Their fathers had been keepers of the entrance to the camp of the Lord. 1 Chronicles 9:19 (NKJV)

The family of Korah from the tribe of Levi were gatekeepers to the tabernacle. Their duties included allowing only those that were clean and authorized to enter the temple, keeping the sacred chambers and ready to be used by priests, and safeguarding the treasuries. They were also responsible for managing temple furnishing, supplies, opening and closing temple gates, and verifying temple vessels were properly stored. The gatekeepers made sure everything was in order so that all could properly worship the Lord.

We are all called to be gatekeepers to our hearts, so that we can properly worship the Lord our God. Luke 6:45 says, “A good person produces good things from the good stored up in his heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the evil stored up in his heart.” What goes into our hearts is what comes out of our hearts. Satan uses television, social media, apps on our phones, the internet, and those around us to control our thoughts and separate us from God. As gatekeepers, we are called to only allow what is clean and authorized to enter our hearts so that we can properly worship our Lord.

What do you look at in the morning when you wake up? Do you go to your phone to see what scandal is brewing in Hollywood or do you go to your bible and read a word of encouragement? Make the statement, "As the gatekeeper, I will guard my heart from that of which is not from the Lord." Start each morning with prayer, asking God to protect your heart and guide you in His ways. Spend time in the word, even if it is just one verse. Do a self-check to determine if your life choices are leading you to stray from the Lord. Choose to attend church, go to home groups, and do activities with other believers. When you are an effective gatekeeper to your heart, proper worship is established, and your heart, mind, and life is transformed, bringing God’s presence, peace, and spiritual renewal.
