Zophar the Naamathite delivers a sharp rebuke to Job, challenging his innocence and urging repentance. His words contain truths about God’s sovereignty and wisdom but misapplies them in Job's case. At the end of his rebuke (v20), he insinuates that Job is spiritually blind, yet he is the one afflicted because he is charging Job of sin without any evidence.
Spiritual blindness is not about physical sight but about the heart and mind being closed to divine truth. From Zophar’s mistakes, we learn that spirit-led counseling requires patience, compassion, kindness, prayer, hope, and humility—avoiding harsh rebukes, false accusations, and promises that don’t align with the truth. In Matthew 15:14, Jesus warns, “Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit,” highlighting the danger of spiritual leaders who lack understanding.
Choose to protect yourself against spiritual blindness by keeping your eyes on your Lord and Savior, Jesus, each and every day. Spiritual blindness is the inability to see or recognize the truth of God, His Word, and His work in your life. Start each morning with prayer, asking God to open your eyes to His beauty and truth. Open His word daily and meditate on it and challenge yourself to see how it applies to your life. If you see yourself deviating from the word, make changes immediately. Guard your “gateways” and be mindful of media, relationships, and ambitions that shape your vision. By consistently turning to God’s Word, living in community, obeying promptly, and guarding your heart and mind, you can protect yourself from spiritual blindness and keep your vision clear and on His ways.
