And the children of Israel, according to their number, the heads of fathers’ houses, the captains of thousands and hundreds and their officers, served the king in every matter of the military divisions. These divisions came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, each division having twenty-four thousand. 1 Chronicles 27:1 (NKJV)
David needed order and structure in his government, and he needed to be ready for any issues that might arise. David also knew that by sharing the duties amongst the twelve tribes, he would have greater success. So, he divided the responsibilities between the tribes of Israel, with each tribe sending twenty-four thousand men to serve him, each month of the year. The burden was shared amongst the tribes, and if there was a crisis or enemy attack, the rest of the country could be activated. David knew the importance of shared responsibility in the organization, diversity, stewardship, leadership, delegation, accountability, and preparation of his kingdom.
In the church and in our personal lives, we cannot do everything alone. As believers, we are more effective when others come around to support us. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” When the church comes together to share responsibilities, common vision and purpose is maintained, more efficient and effective mission work is achieved, there is a greater impact on the community, and there is growth in the church.
Choose to help out in the church and share the responsibilities of leading people to Christ. Ask you pastor or elder, "Where can I help out?" Don't try to do things alone, because you will be more effective when others come around to help you out. Join a home group and aid in giving a lesson. Volunteer for a church community event and share the love of Christ with those outside your church. Don't be afraid to lay hands on someone needing prayer and join in prayer. Prayer from a group is more effective. By sharing responsibilities, you not only help the church grow, but you also grow and become a more effective disciple of Christ.
