Oh, that I were as in months past, as in the days when God watched over me; Job 29:2 (NKJV)
Longing for the life that he once had, Job remembers that just months before, he had a life of prosperity, honor, and grace, feeling God's presence in all he did. Job’s wish is for a renewal of that spiritual and relational experience with God and not merely material comfort. He describes God’s “lamp” shining on his head, guiding him through darkness in uncertain times. He yearns for restoration and renewed fellowship with God. Jobs words are a faithful man’s heartfelt desire to return to a season when God’s care felt close and constant, and that his deepest human longing in suffering is for restored communion with God.
When we are suffering and feel that all has been lost, we need to first seek a connection with God. Sometimes our suffering is a result of losing that connection, and sometimes it's because we need to grow in a certain area, building a stronger connection. James 1:2–4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness… so that you may be perfect and complete.” No matter the situation, we need to always seek to strengthen our connection with God, knowing that our trial's draw us into deeper reconciliation with God, producing hope, character, and a stronger faith.
Remember that God has got you, no matter the situation. When you feel weak, choose to draw closer to God by trusting in Jesus Christ as your mediator. He died for you. Make reading the Bible a daily habit, even if it’s just a few minutes, choosing a comforting book such as the Psalms for words of hope, Proverbs for wisdom, or Job for understanding suffering. When you feel lost, pray honestly, including prayers of surrender, guidance, gratitude, and strength which can renew your connection to Him. Practice worship and gratitude, remembering that God’s ways are higher than yours and surrendering your worries and doubts to Him. Trust that He is working behind the scenes. No matter if have lost your connection with God or are a faith filled person, a closer connection with the Lord will get you through any tribulation that may try to control your life.
