Then the king answered them roughly. King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders 2 Chronicles 10:13 (NKJV)
Shortly after Rehoboam became king following Solomons death, the elders of Isreal came to him and asked if he could lighten the burdensome service that his father had put on them. King Rehoboam rejected the advice of Solomon's elders, who urged him to do as the ten tribes of Israel requested, and went with the advice of the young men who said to increase the load. Because of Rehoboam's pride, the ten northern tribes separated from the kingdom and made Jeroboam king over them.
Like King Rehoboam, pride divides our families, our churches, and our community. Pride is considered as the original sin and the root of all other sins. It was Satan's pride that caused his ejection from heaven and what he uses to trick Christians today. He knows that when we are prideful, sin enters our family life, our churches start to divide, and we become less effective in doing what Jesus commissioned us to do: making disciples, one person at a time. It is our choice to reject the pride that Satan temps us with and accept the humility that Jesus modeled for us. Romans 12:3 says, “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.” When we realize that grace was given to us by Jesus' death, it becomes easier to fight our pride.
Choose to fight the pride that may try to control you. Resist the urge to judge others and let scripture guide you conduct. Have a mindset that everything is a gift from God and not yourself. God made you, and when you start thinking that all your possessions come from you, God is taken out of the picture. Practice humility through listening and practice an attitude of gratitude, giving thanks for all you have and everyone God puts in your life to support you. Guard you heart with prayer and scripture reading, and do a daily self-check, taking accountability for the times that pride takes control. Don't let pride divide and separate all that is good in your life.
