And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So, he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him. 1 Samuel 22:2

On the run from Saul, David finds the Cave of Adullam to hide in. The cave was located in the lowlands of ancient Judah, and featured rugged terrain with numerous limestone caves, providing natural shelter and strategic advantages against Saul's forces. Davids family joins him there and word gets out to those in distress, in debt, and discontented, who also join him there. Soon, David has a force or four hundred men who were seeking refuge or a better life. From the fortress that God provided, a group of unlikely men is used by Him to change Israel for the better.

Just like David and his men, God has a place for those in distress and discontented to go. From that stronghold He changes lives for the better. 1 Corinthians 1:27 states, "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." Church is not a place we go because we have it all together. It is a place we go because we know we need help. Some may say, 'I'm not going to church because of all the rotten things I have done,' or 'I am not going because I had a terrible week and I need to relax at home.' Those are the reasons why we need to go to church. Church is for the disheartened, the discouraged, and the demoralized. It is a place where God will not only lift your spirits but use you and others like you to change the world.

Choose to go to church and give your hurts, habits, and hangups to God. Join a Celebrate Recovery or another faith-based recovery program and join others like you to get healing through Jesus who gives us healing. Remember that recovery is not just for the 'chemical addicted', but for everyone, because we all have fallen short. Everyone has something to work on. When we go to God's fortress, He changes us for the better, and then uses us, to change others for the better.
