But Saul said, "Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has accomplished salvation in Israel." 1 Samuel 11:13 (NKJV)
Saul has not even been coronated as king and is working the fields when a messenger from Jabesh Gilead shows up requesting help. Nahash, the Ammonite king had surrounded their town and is going to take the right eye of every man for their servitude. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Saul, so he cuts up the oxen and sends pieces all through the territory of Isreal and says, "whoever does not go with Saul and Samuel to battle, so it will be done to them as the oxen." Three hundred and thirty thousand men show up for battle, and they easily defeat the Ammonites. Some of Saul's men call for the death of those who opposed him, but he responds with grace. He says that no one is going to be put to death because the day is about celebrating on what God had done for the country. Saul's forgiveness accomplished way more for the restoration of Israel than if he had taken revenge on those who opposed him. All the Israelites renew their commitment as one people and recognize Saul as king.
Recognizing God's role in our success and being ready to forgive are two key ideas that resonated in Saul's victory and is true for Christians today. Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." This verse reminds us that success is not just about material gains but is deeply rooted in our relationship with God. By trusting in Him and relying on His guidance, we can find confidence in our abilities and decisions, ultimately leading us toward our goals. Ephesians 4:32 says, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of forgiveness in the Christian faith and encourage believers to extend grace and mercy to others. Forgiveness unites us by fostering compassion and healing within relationships. It allows individuals to confront past pain, release anger, and move forward with greater empathy towards others. By embracing forgiveness, we can create a more compassionate and connected world.
Choose forgiveness over revenge when you are wronged. Revenge separates us and forgiveness restores the broken. Remember to always go to God first in prayer and meditation for any circumstance, and you will be successful. Recognize His power to make the wrong, right. Forgiveness and restoration are what God provided when He sent His only Son to die on the cross for us. Forgiveness and restoration are what we do to honor His sacrifice.
