1 Chronicles 25:1 Music was important not only in temple worship but in the battles that the Israelites fought. Just like the Israelites, music helps us in our battles.

Moreover, David and the captains of the army separated for the service some of the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, stringed instruments, and cymbals. And the number of the skilled men performing their service was: 1 Chronicles 25:1 (NKJV)

Why would David include the captains of the army in helping choose men for musical service? It was because music was integral to military engagements, serving to inspire troops, intimidate enemies, and declare God’s presence. Music was also used in prophesy, uplifting and guiding the troops into battle. God used music in the battle of Jerico, (Josua 6:1-20) to bring down the walls and Jehoshaphat’s army sang “Give thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures forever”, declaring their faith and trust in God’s sovereignty. David included his captains in finding musicians, because he knew of its importance in battle.

As with David's army, music is a tool that we can use to fight our physical and spiritual battles. Worship is a command from God and Ephesians 5:19 says, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” When we sing out to the Lord in worship, we unite ourselves, focus on God’s power, and affirm trust in His deliverance. Worship honors God, fulfills His command, aligns us with our divine purpose, deepens our intimacy with Him, and strengthens our personal faith, building the Christian community. We are made stronger through the music we sing to the Lord and better prepared to fight our battles.

Choose to include worship music not only in church, but in your everyday life. Listen to worship in your home and in your car, letting the Spirit control your actions. When you have a joyous heart, you will be less likely to have a fit of road rage. Sing songs like "Battle Belongs", which says "So when I fight, I'll fight on my knees, with my hands lifted high. Oh God, the battle belongs to You." When you sing it, it is in your heart, and you believe it, strengthening yourself for battle. Remember that worship is music given to you from God to strengthen you and help you fight your battles.
