For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ 1 Kings 17:14 (NKJV)

Elijah the Tishbite prophesied against King Ahab because of the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord and said that there would be no rain in the land. God then sent him to the Brook Cherith to protect him from Ahab and keep him nourished. Elijah did so until the brook ran dry and the Lord sent him to Zarephath where a widow would provide for his needs. He found the widow that that God had sent by a well, who had only enough food for one last meal for herself and her son. Elijah told the widow that she would have enough food for them until the rains came. The widow who had lost her husband and had no source of income to take care of her son believed and God took care of her. She had more faith than Elijah because she had experienced suffering her whole life, yet choose to have faith in God, while Elijah had been experiencing God's faithfulness his whole life.

It is easy to have faith in God when life seems easy, but what happens when things get though. Do you have faith in God when you lose your job and don't know if you are going to lose your house? Do you have faith in God when He leads you in a new direction and you don't feel it is going the way you wanted it? Do you have faith in God when someone close to you dies and you don't know how you are going to live without them? No matter what tragedy you are facing, that is the time that you need faith in God. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." When times are tough, we put our faith into action by going to Jesus who will bring us though a quandary of troubles.

Choose to have the faith of the widow when times are hard. Don't just tell others but know it your heart that God will get you through your trials. When facing hard times, remember that God's love is unchanging and His faithfulness is constant. Choose to see His past faithfulness, read His Word daily, pray honestly, and lean on other believers for support. Faith is about believing in God's promises and relying on His guidance, even when the answers don't come right away. Faith is an action word where you show the world, God doing the impossible through you.
