For at that time, they came to David day by day to help him, until it was a great army, like the army of God. 1 Chronicles 12:22 (NKJV)
David's army grew because God was with him and all of Isreal knew. Soldiers loyal to Saul, like Amasai, the chief of the captains from the tribe of Benjamin pledged his support and loyalty. The men were from a diverse group of warriors coming together to support David, and were well equipped and ready for battle, showing the strength found in unity among different tribes. David had the army to defeat the nations around him, because it was God's will, and God was with David.
How do we know if God is with us and supporting what we do? When God is with us, we see signs of His presence in various ways such as unexplainable peace, joy, and a sense of tranquility, even in life's toughest challenges. We have an authentic relationship with God and other believers and are willing to serve wherever we are led by the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me." When we come to God and admit that we can't do it alone, He backs us and our exploits are successful.
Choose to secure God's backing. Pray and meditate on His word, asking for guidance and direction. Use the gifts that the Lord gave you to serve your family, the church, and in the community. If you feel the Spirit is leading, seek conformation from other believers. If it is God's will, He will provide you with the people and the resources that you need. Remember to have a heart for God, always seeking his will in your life, and you will find that He is backing you.
