These four were born to the giant in Gath and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. 2 Samuel 21:22 (NKJV)
David goes to war with the Philistines again and faces giants. He no longer has the strength to face them alone and with the aid of his servants they are defeated. The first giant is Ishbi-Benob, who was a formidable warrior with a heavy spear can represent the great challenges in our lives, like health issues and loss. The next giant was Saph, who immediately followed the first and can represent the sins and problems that keep coming back to haunt us. After Saph, the brother of Goliath was defeated, who carried a spear like a weavers beam and can represent the heavy burdens that can carry us over the edge. The final giant had six fingers on each hand and six toes one each foot, which can represent the numerous trials that we face and are too many for us to count. David was able to defeat these giants only with the aid of his men.
Like David, we face giants today and we cannot face them alone. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” The bible instructs us to help each other in difficult times, which is the law of Christ. Alone we will fail, but as a community of believers watching out for each other, we are strong and will triumph over our challenges. Ecclesiastes 4:12 talks about how one person can be overpowered, but a three-stranded cord cannot be easily defeated. As a community of believers taking on each other's burdens, we can defeat our giants.
Choose to equip yourself to take on life's giant. Make God first in your life, praying daily and meditating on His word. Build a community of believers that can support you. Find a church to plug into, attend life groups, and find a faith-based recovery group to attend. Get to know the Christians that you meet and don't be afraid to come to them with your issues. Be willing to be there for those in need of support. By coming together as a community of believers there is not giant that we can't take on and defeat.
