Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:45 (NKJV)
The Israelites and Philistine armies are lined up in a battle array, in the Valley of Elah, on opposite sides. The Philistine champion, Goliath stands for forty days, cursing the Israelites and challenging them to one-on-one combat. The loser's country will serve the other. Goliath who is a seasoned warrior and a giant causes fear in all of Israel. David, who is visiting his brothers on the front line accepts the challenge. Everyone on both sides know he is doomed, because he is young sheep herder, and Goliath is a seasoned warrior who is twice his size. But David says he has killed lions and bears defending his flock, and Goliaths sword and spear are nothing compared to the power of God. Because of his unwavering faith, David beats Goliath, and inspires the entire Israelite army to victory over the Philistines.
We all have Goliaths which represent the various challenges and obstacles we face in life. These can include financial struggles, fear, anxiety, relationship conflicts, health battles, or feelings of inadequacy. These challenges may seem overwhelming, but like David, we can find ways to confront them head-on. Romans 8:31 says, "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?" This verse reassures us that God is on our side and can help us overcome any challenges they face. Like David, we need to face our goliaths in the name of the Lord. We need to have the steadfast faith that David had. When we overcome our struggles, other Christians see it and are inspired to do the same.
Choose to trust in God to give you courage to face your goliaths. Regularly spend time with God and keep a record of His work in your life to build confidence in His sufficiency. Establish a regular routine for prayer and reflection to deepen your relationship with Him. Recognize the specific challenges you face and focus on overcoming them one by one. Seek divine assistance through prayer and trust in God's plan for your life. Be open about your challenges and show others how you beat your goliaths, and you will inspire them to do the same.
