A Still Small Voice

1 Kings 19:11-12 We expect to hear from the Lord though a momentous sign, but God speaks to us through a still small voice. That was true for Elijah and that is true for us.

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 1 Kings 19:11-12 (NKJV)

After killing the 450 prophets, Jezabel seeks Elijahs life and he escapes to the wilderness outside of Beersheba, where God fed him for forty days and forty nights. Elijah then went into a cave and spent a night, and God asked him what he was doing there. Elijah told God that he was the last one left serving Him, so God called him out of the cave and on to the mountain, where He spoke to Elijah in a still small voice. The Lord let Elijah know that there were still 7000 people left that did not bow to Baal and that He was going to use Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha, setting in motion a plan for the future.

We like to think that God will speak to us in some momentous proclamation, and we will feel the mountains rumble and the wind blow, sending us into action for the Lord. But God often speaks to us through a still small voice, offering comfort and direction. John 10:27 says, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." Hearing God's voice is not just about recognition; it also involves responding with obedience and faith.

Choose to actively listen for God's voice. Start each morning with prayer, asking Him for guidance and waiting patiently for His direction. Meditate on His word daily, looking for His will in your life. God provides all the answers to your questions in His word. Listen to the Holy Spirit, which is within you, helping you follow His will for your life. When you take the time to listen to that still small voice, God uses it for profound spiritual growth and transformation in your life.
